We tend to show design at its best: a full dashboard, a beautiful article, a collection of perfect photographs. But people spend a surprising amount of time between those moments.
They’re waiting. Searching. Starting over. Looking for something that isn’t there yet.
Empty doesn’t have to mean confusing
An empty state should answer three questions: Where am I? Why is this empty? What can I do next?
You don’t need a clever illustration if one clear sentence and a useful action will do.
Make the next step obvious
A successful action shouldn’t leave someone guessing. Tell them what happened, preserve the context they need, and point toward the next useful step.
| Moment | A useful response |
|---|---|
| Nothing matches a search | Explain and offer a way to clear filters |
| An article is saved | Confirm it and link to saved articles |
| A draft is stored | Show its status without publishing it |
Care is cumulative
These details rarely make the presentation. They make the experience.
A thoughtful product is one that pays attention even when things are incomplete.
